She is an internationally recognized scholar and leading expert in Indonesian and international environmental law. Her research focuses on critical global environmental issues, including climate change, REDD+, carbon markets and carbon credits, land governance, and customary (adat) rights and communities.

She was a member of the Indonesian delegation involved in the negotiations leading to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. From 2018 to 2022, she served as a Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report, contributing to one of the world’s most authoritative assessments of climate change science, impacts, and policy responses.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia; a Master of Science in Environmental Policy from Wageningen University, the Netherlands; a Master of Science in Urban Management from the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS), Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands; and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, USA.

She currently serves on the editorial boards of two internationally recognized academic journals: Carbon Management (since 2022) and the Asian Journal of Comparative Law (since 2021). She is also a prolific author and speaker, with extensive publications and contributions comprising presentations, books, book chapters, academic papers and reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, and legal and policy commentaries.
